Karin van Maanen
Consultant

Project management
During her three  years working with Anne Peaker Centre for Arts in Criminal Justice, Karin developed a thorough understanding and knowledge of how the arts can support offenders' rehabilitation and education. Whilst at the centre, she developed two successful projects for young offenders and young people at risk
(see young people section). She also worked very closely with Anne Peaker Centre and Koestler Trust staff on the development of Learning 2 Learn, a visual arts education programme for prisoners not engaged in work or education whilst in prison.

Impact of the arts in criminal justice settings - development of evaluation methods

Karin also became involved in researching the impact the arts can have on (ex)-offenders. This is an important area of work as funding bodies, including the National Offender Management Service and other government departments, want to evidence how the voluntary and community sector can help them deliver their reducing re-offending targets. She researched a National Youth Theatre-led programme for young fathers in YOI Rochester, and evaluated two Synergy Theatre Projects programmes, in the community and in HMP Brixton. This involved interviewing participants, observing sessions, talking to stakeholders including prison governors, prison officers, other inmates, local police and the artists. She published several reports on this area of work
(see evaluation section).

Handbook for Artists
Karin worked closely with Chris Johnston on the publication of an updated and revised version of Anne Peaker's original Handbook for Artists Working in Ciminal Justice Settings. The Handbook is available from
Anne Peaker Centre.
